THE MILL DAM

PICTURE: View from the south of the west side of the Cherry Park, looking northeast at the Cherry Park west, and the West Broad Street bridge. Jan. 2006

2-S-OF-BROAD-ST-BRIDGE600X2.jpg
PICTURE: From the same spot as above, looking north at the west wall of the mill pond and the West Broad Street bridge. Dec 2005.

7-MILL-DAM600X320.jpg
PICTURE: View of the mill dam through the new fence, immediately south of the last two views. Dec 2005. The conifer across the water to the east is one of our wonderful native eastern white pines that create a warm shelter in winter for our small songbirds and beautify our New England skylines.

PICTURE: Detail of the original dam works that have now mostly rusted out. Dec. 2005

9-S-OF-DAM600X287.jpg
PICTURE: View of the dam looking north from the Main Street Bridge. Dec 2005. Click here for the same view in the Summer, 2003. Note the much lower level of water. In the summer, egrets and herons are often seen fishing near the dam.

PICTURE: Looking south from the river walk below the Mill Dam at the iron bridge at Main Street. The bridge has been closed off as no longer safe for automobile traffic and locally called "The Ruined Bridge". Dec 2005. The bridge's trouble appears to have begun a decade or two ago when the City fathers painted the bridge an un-bridgelike bright pastel purple. Some say it was an intentional choice; others say the paint was on sale. The color, fortunately has faded to a tone more proper for a self-respecting bridge.

PICTURE: View looking west across the Ruined Bridge at Main Street, Jan. 2006. What was once Stamford's official "main street" is now a very short downtown side street. They say that Main Street was once part of the Boston Post Road until the Landmark Tower was build smack in the middle of the street, and East Main Street and West Main Street were re-routed to hook up with Tresser Boulevard a block to the south. Across the bridge, on the south side of Main Street, there is an excellent Jamaican-West Indian take-out kitchen-restaurant.

PICTURE: View from the west side of the Ruined Bridge, look north Christmas Eve, 2005. To the left is the newly up-graded riverwalk and bicycle path.

PICTURE: View from the east side of the Ruined Bridge, look south Jan. 2006 along the newly up-graded riverwalk and bicycle path toward Tresser Boulevard. The new play ground will be build at the corner of Tresser in the Spring of 2006.
