SCILLA IN SPRING

Remember the bulbs potted up last fall (issue 29)? Here are the scilla blooming through an April snowstorm.

Spring bulbs are like bank accounts: make the deposit, months later get a return with interest. Siberian Squill (scilla siberica) is a terrific lily-family member from Central Russia that can tolerate moist part-shade. The Asian-style glazed terra cotta pot, now featuring moss and scilla, also contains a dormant hardy begonia that will be the balcony-garden star come August (issue 26).
